Cave Description & Aragonite Crystals

Bear's Cave is a multi-level cavity featuring an active underground stream gallery and an upper fossil level. The fossil level is characterized by rare helictites and aragonite crystal clusters, mineral formations that grow in multiple directions defying gravity. Bear's Cave is currently the longest surveyed cave system in Arad County (over 2,500 m of explored galleries).

History of Explorations

Following several earlier attempts, in August 1984 cave divers from G.S.S. "Transilvania" (Oradea), M.H.Sz. (Debrecen, Hungary), and C.S. Speodava crossed the entrance sump for the first time and explored more than 500 meters of virgin gallery.

Following the mining of the 50 m tourist tunnel intercepting the Main Active Gallery in 1986, the cave was systematically explored and re-surveyed by G.E.S. Aragonit Arad, Speofoto Oradea, C.S.A. Liliacul, and from 2001 by A.S. Speowest Arad.
